During the academic year, more than 84,000 students, or one in seven District of Columbia residents, attend college at a D.C. Consortium university.  Another 71,000 students go to school at Consortium universities in Suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia.  Consortium colleges and universities attract a wide variety of students.  With an average age of 26, more than 40% of the Consortium’s students are pursuing graduate or professional degrees.  Across the country, people have turned to higher education as an opportunity to improve their marketability, as more and more jobs require a higher degree of educational attainment.  The colleges and universities of Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area are no exception as enrollment in non-degree and continuing education graduate courses has soared.
